How Does an Electromagnetic Brake Protect Our Safety?

The electromagnetic brake operates on a fail-safe principle: power-off braking, power-on release. It only works when we need it most.

When equipment is running (Power ON) :
The coil energizes, creating a magnetic force that pulls the armature away, compressing the springs. The brake pad releases the rotating shaft, allowing smooth, drag-free operation.
When stopping or during a power failure (Power OFF) :
When power is cut, the magnetic field collapses instantly. Springs immediately push the armature and brake pad against the friction surface, locking the shaft securely. This rapid friction prevents the equipment from rolling due to inertia or gravity.

How Does It Keep Us Safe in Critical Moments?

  1. Emergency Power Loss Protection: If power fails during operation, the brake automatically locks the motor, preventing uncontrolled movement of forklifts or trailers.
  2. Hill-Hold Safety: It provides reliable holding torque on inclines, preventing rollback and protecting operators and bystanders.
  3. Auto-Parking Convenience: On modern vehicles, it can act as an automatic parking brake when speed reaches zero, eliminating the risk of forgetting to engage a manual handbrake.

Installation Tips:

  1. Keep it Clean: Friction surfaces must be free of oil, grease, or moisture—contamination drastically reduces braking force.
  2. Set the Air Gap: Adjust the gap between armature and magnet body to manufacturer specifications. Too large = weak braking; too small = incomplete release.
  3. Secure Mounting: Use thread-locking compound on bolts. Ensure proper alignment (coaxiality) with the shaft.
